Pilot project: Live bus camera feeds into the Transit Control Centre

Français

On June 1, 2021, as part of an ongoing commitment to increasing operator and passenger safety, Winnipeg Transit launched a pilot project to live stream bus camera feeds into Transit’s Control Centre in emergency situations.

Bus operators are trained to contact Transit’s Control Centre in emergencies, and with this new technology, Control Centre supervisors will be able to immediately tap into the live camera feed from the bus to assess the situation and dispatch the appropriate emergency services. The Transit Control Centre is staffed by Transit supervisors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The pilot project includes a total of 50 buses and involves the use of existing LTE modem technology on those buses which allows the bus cameras to connect to the Transit Control Centre in real time in emergency situations.

Winnipeg Transit began installing LTE modems on buses in 2019 as part of its commitment to updating the technology and technical capabilities of its fleet. The pilot project makes use of existing camera technology on buses and didn’t require the installation of any additional equipment.

The recommendation for the live camera feed pilot project was made by the Transit Advisory Committee.
