We are building a new bus garage in northwest Winnipeg.
The $200M state-of-the-art Oak Point Garage will be located at the intersection of Selkirk Avenue and Oak Point Highway.
We currently operate more than 600 buses from three garages across Winnipeg:
Fort Rouge Garage (421 Osborne St.)
Brandon Garage (600 Brandon Ave.)
North Garage (1520 Main St.)
Our oldest – the North Garage – is beyond its useful life. It was built for buses of a different era and cannot accommodate modern buses. This includes 60-foot buses, buses with bike racks, and buses with roof-mounted air conditioners.
Oak Point Garage is our highest priority infrastructure project. At 259,000 sq. ft., it will allow us to purchase and maintain more 60-foot buses.
The new garage will also allow us to expand our Transition to Zero-Emission Bus Program. It will have electrical chargers and dispensers for 24 battery-electric buses. There will be room for future zero-emission expansion as well.
This net-zero carbon building will be LEED Silver certified and include:
Six maintenance and repair bays
Four service bays and one wash rack
A bus interior cleaning area
Adequate administration space
A bus loop for future routes
Construction of Oak Point Garage will be completed in 2027.

Background
Our highest priority infrastructure need is a new bus garage.
We currently operate a fleet of more than 600 buses. This includes diesel and our new zero-emission buses (ZEBs). We house and maintain those buses from three garages in Winnipeg
Fort Rouge Garage (421 Osborne St.)
Brandon Garage (600 Brandon Ave.)
North Garage (1520 Main St.)
The North Garage, located on Main Street, is our oldest facility. It was built for buses of a different era and is too small for future growth. It cannot accommodate 60-foot buses, zero-emission buses, buses with bike racks, and buses with roof-mounted air conditioners.
We need a modern garage to meet our modern needs.
Finding the site
The process for selecting possible sites for a garage started in 2017. We toured and reviewed properties within City of Winnipeg limits.
Early investigations focused on a City-owned property west of the East Yards. Due to the level of contamination on the site, it was not a good option. After considering several large holdings in East Kildonan, Transcona, and St. Boniface, the search expanded across the city. Two unsuccessful Expression of Interests were issued in 2020 and 2022.
In mid-2022, we explored land assembly to secure the required property. We selected land located on the west side of Oak Point Highway. This included two private properties beside a former City landfill and unimproved rights-of-way.
The site, located at the intersection of Selkirk Avenue and Oak Point Highway, offers the following advantages:
Access to a major transportation route
Proximity to Red River College
Industrial setting
Direct access to the signalized intersection at Selkirk Avenue
Adjacency to future high-frequency Transit routes
Tri-level funding
City Council directed the Public Service, in 2021, to submit the North Garage Replacement Project to the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).
The City of Winnipeg received a letter from the Province of Manitoba in November 2022, advising the approval of the $200M project for federal and provincial funding under ICIP. The City received approval that it could start making expenditures in December.
In November 2023, we awarded the contract for professional consulting services for the detailed design and tender for construction.
Construction of Oak Point Garage begins
City Council approved the award of construction for Oak Point Garage in July 2025.
Following the approval, site work began in August. We hosted a ceremony in September 2025 with all three levels of government, which also included a design unveiling. You can take a virtual tour of the garage here.
Oak Point Garage is expected to be completed in 2027.

In May 2024, we introduced the North Garage Replacement Project to the community.
We hosted an information session at Tyndall Park Community Centre. Residents met with the project team to learn more about the new garage and voice any concerns. We also met with affected home and business owners.
