Transit History and Vehicle Preservation
The Manitoba Transit Heritage Association, Inc. (MTHA) was established on July 21, 1989, by a group of dedicated Winnipeg Transit employees and retirees interested in collecting and preserving memorabilia and heritage vehicles related to the history of the City of Winnipeg’s Public Transit system.
The Manitoba Transit Heritage Association is a non-profit museum and registered charity whose volunteers continue to restore and maintain the largest collection of authentic antique transit vehicles in the Province of Manitoba.
The Association is also involved in researching and acquiring vintage Transit items such as tickets, passes & transfers, bus stop signage, driver uniforms and badges, and maintains an extensive collection of historical Transit photographs.
Our Mission
The mission of the MTHA is to restore old transit vehicles for historic purposes; to create a transit museum for display of transit vehicles; and to provide restored heritage transit vehicles for public parades, displays & exhibitions, and for educational purposes.
During the summer months, MTHA volunteers proudly drive and display this unique collection of ten vintage Transit vehicles at various community festivals, special events, car shows, schools and senior centres.
Heritage Fleet
The operating heritage bus fleet is one of the MTHA’s most prized collections, offering a physical, moving record celebrating over one hundred & thirty-five years of public transit service in the City of Winnipeg.
Lead by the voluntary efforts of retired and current Winnipeg Transit employees, the MTHA’s Heritage Fleet program ensures that vintage buses, trolleys, and other related equipment are properly maintained and stored and that the historic vehicles continue to be used for parades, group outings, and other public events. The Program also provides guidelines for future preservation, maintenance and repair efforts for these vehicles, as well as for the addition of vehicles that may be added to the Heritage Fleet in the future.

125th Anniversary
On October 20th 1882 public transit was successfully tested in Winnipeg with regular service starting the next day. The first service in Winnipeg consisted of four horse drawn street cars on tracks. 125 years later with a fleet of 533 buses Winnipeg Transit continues to provide the citizens of Winnipeg with efficient, reliable, and affordable public transit.
